Eastern South Dakota and Minnesota are known for productive agricultural land on which high quality corn, soybeans, wheat and alfalfa are most commonly grown. With increasing productivity and demand for farm commodities, cropland values across the country have increased significantly over the past 10 years. The midwest is known for its world-class hunting. Hunters from all over the country come to our fields in search of the famous ring-necked pheasant, waterfowl and many other small game species. Pheasant season is always one of the biggest events of the year with thousands of hunters and millions of birds.

Waterfront property is exceedingly popular in this region as Minnesota is known as the land of 10,000 lakes. To name a few, Big Stone Lake in Southwestern Minnesota is famous for its excellent walleye fishing and is also the headwaters for the Minnesota River that runs through Southern Minnesota. Lewis and Clark Recreation Area, near Yankton, South Dakota, draws water lovers of all sorts. Sailing, wind surfing, water skiing and fishing are popular pastimes at this one-stop vacation destination. It's named for explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, who followed the Missouri River through South Dakota in 1804. This region has been a leader in ethanol production as the renewable energy is heavily reliant upon the substantial corn production in the area. The production of corn in South Dakota has increased over the past couple of years, especially east of the Missouri River as there are 17 ethanol plants currently operating or under construction. It is anticipated that approximately 50% of the state’s corn supply will be converted into ethanol in 2008. Another growing renewable energy resource in our region is wind power. The development and expansion of wind energy on the Buffalo Ridge has impacted our region tremendously as hundreds of wind turbines have been constructed and are currently generating energy. Buffalo Ridge, a windy prairie on the South Dakota – Minnesota border, extends from Watertown, SD diagonally across southwestern Minnesota and into Iowa. Created by a glacial drift from the last ice age, the Buffalo Ridge is ideal for wind power generation and is one of the richest wind sources in America.
